Representation of Stereotypes Through Sound and Mise en Scene
The representation of stereotypes through sound and mise en scene in Anuvahood would be at a lot of different scenes. One is when the main character, Kenneth attempts to sing a chinese song mocking the Chinese man in the film. This racial stereotype portrays Chinese people to talk that way but really is just making a bunch of sounds that don't make sense but sound slightly similar to how Chinese people actually talk. This shows that the main character is portraying racism in the area where the people make fun of people of different races.
Another example would be when the scene where Tyrone, the neighbourhood gangster bully gets a fine from the traffic warden for parking his car on a double yellow line. The parking is supposed to be allowed for people with disabilities only but Tyrone is not disabled. He pretends to be disabled and just flops his arm. This stereotypes disabled people because disabled people don't just flop their arms and aren't all disabled that way. Many disabled people are either disabled on some other part of the body or mentally disabled but he makes it seem that all disabled people have a floppy arm.
The mise en Scene of the film would be that the Costumes are suitable because they seem to be from the area of the setting of the film. This gives an accurate representation of the setting and the life there.
The lighting is appropriate to the film because they are outdoors and it is bright so it fits well. This makes the setting seem realistic and gives the viewer a good feel of being there.
The production design is good because the film makes you feel like you are there by having accurate representations of the setting. The overall feel and style is suitable for the comedy film it is and the props used improve the acting.
The performance was good because they all did well at their roles and at representing their characters that came from London. This was especially done well because they used a lot of colloquial language which were native to the area of London specifically.
The props they used made them fit into their characters well such as Kenneth's cap which made him seem of a hoodlum and young man. The strings of the lantern from the Chinese song scene made the Chinese place look authentic because it added to the Chinese culture feeling. The headphone set that Tyrone had made him look like a typical hoodlum.
